S.P.Y.H. were and are always good for stories with a beginning:
Once upon a time. And like all stories, they all contain a spark of truth, but also harbour wishful thinking and visions. This is also the case with S.Y.P.H. . There may be plenty of fabulation and ranting about this elsewhere. I will now describe my perceptions here and how I experienced it. A story full of inspiration, devotion and pain and great suffering, despair and personal entanglements with sometimes devastating consequences. Just the kind of band story that seems to be so common:
Well, that's how I want to start :
Once upon a time there was Ulli, who worked as a carpenter for his father and one day was given a new apprentice to look after. This was Uwe Jahnke, who was parked with us due to the influence of his egocentric father. Basically, Uwe didn't really feel like it. Well, there he was and we became friends, two brothers in spirit who didn't really get on with their fathers. Then one day, Uwe asked me if I would like to play in his band with two others and if there was a gig in two weeks.... Well, I agreed. So the "FOUR!!! founding members of S.Y.P.H. met for the first time in the Bar of Thomas Schwebel, who was a member. Together with Peter Braatz we were now the quartet. Thomas and Peter had previously bragged in the cult pub "Ratinger Hof in Düsseldorf" that they had a band and talked about their first lyrics. Everyone laughed at them and didn't take it seriously. Until the gig at the Carshhaus came up. What a great reception it was when we, as Syph (at that time still without points), were actually seen and heard on stage. The formation of Syph was official (four musicians and a friend of Peter's who played bass as an extra), so Peter Braatz, Thomas Schwebel, Uwe Jahnke and Ulrich Putsch. The others may see it differently. For me, that's my version and it's irrefutable.........

About Harry Rag (Peter Braatz)
Links:
This album combines the ingredients for a new era in the understanding of making music and, basically, the fusion of rebellion with intuition and improvisation. The messages arose in the respective moment. So one can hold that the two days of the Mauerstadtfestival for the opening of the SO 36 in Berlin represents a milestone in the music world at that time. It turned every norm or idea of making music upside down. The share of S.Y.P.H. in its original line-up is recorded on the first page, a real contemporary document. The second side is characterised by the recording sessions in the rehearsal rooms and small live performances. All the recordings were made before the single ‘Viel Feind viel Ehr’ and already reveal many ideas and preferences. A kind of Dadaist collection of material from what were at that time still completely naive and ignorant boys who had found a common playground. Which came first? The chicken or the egg. The fusion of ideas and fragments basically only suggests that everything SYPH (then still without dots) did musically was a kind of group work. The tendency to elevate oneself to the composer has also led to much dispute and discord in the further history of the band. One reason why the band always had phases where members left the band and later came back was a kind of love-hate relationship, not being able to let go of each other, even though it was toxic to the point of self-destruction. Irmin Schmidt (CAN) once put it succinctly in an interview: this kind of confrontation was violent, destructive and, for him, symbolic of punk. You can leave it at that as a statement. However, this kind of egomaniacal destructiveness, which ended in power games and bullying, was not my approach to making music. Even back then, I generated the sounds and contributions from within myself that were able to connect and harmonise the aspects of the other players. Not a healthy approach, because it consumes you. So you can use the second side as an example of how compositional megalomania always goes against the overall goal. An important contribution in the life of a musician. You learn to distinguish.

The second LP that should have been the fourth:
What a gift to be able to record again in Innerspace, the sacred place that was used as the basis for the music of our Heros - CAN. After the first recording session the band couldn't quite get along with the masters made by Holger (a mystery to this day) and these recordings only saw the light of day in the 4th LP, a very special deal was made with Holger. We gave him the Little Neo track and all the copyrights to it, and in return we were allowed to use more studio time. He turned it into the song ‘On the way to the peak of Normal’, which managed to attract a lot of attention worldwide. We then recorded new tracks which were again more punky and short except for the B side which again ended in three much longer tracks. It was also during this time that Hoger gave us another lesson in magic and music itself. The grandmaster had us firmly under control (for which I am still very grateful to him today). During this time there was a real cohesion in the band and all pieces were jointly declared as originators, as on the 4th LP. Unfortunately, this was no longer the case after and partly before that. The egos became too big. Conclusion for me: Apart from the 4th LP, this is the essential meaning of S.Y.P.H. for me. A truly epic record. Carmen Knebel took over the recordings for the 4th LP as well as this production and so it was released under the label : Pure Freude. Thank you Carmen . The cover was made by Imi Knoebel a worldwide appreciated painter from Düsseldorf . It hits the music exactly on the point. Many thanks for this IMI

The 4th LP, which should basically have been the second.
It is one of my personal favourites in the band's history. The time we spent as a band at CAN Studio Weilerswist, the legendary Innerspace Studio, catapulted me personally into a whole new and very inspiring world of sound. Basically, the production was a groundbreaking time that changed everything I (we) have been able to do with music so far. Holger Czukay created something new from the scraps of sound we produced that we couldn't even grasp at first. He really hammered it into us that music needs magic and if it's not there, then what we've made is no good. Captured by the mystical atmosphere in this sacred temple, we then created these worlds of sound. And Holger then pulled them out of the morass of sound monsters. It was difficult for us to accept at first that we, as proven rebels and superpunks, had made this and should release it. There were fierce discussions (as always in studio situations with S.Y.P.H.) How a majority in favour of a new date came about is basically a mystery to me, because I thought the recordings were fabulous and absolutely great. One of the many inconsistencies in SYPH's illustrious band history. It always says that this record was produced by Holger Czukay and Harry Rag. I see that completely differently, because basically we all did it together. After the band broke up, Peter, as so often, went it alone without asking anyone. (A behaviour that he has not abandoned to this day, as he felt he was the band leader) In this case I am very grateful to him for this, even though this very disc was to become a major bone of contention and ultimately ended in an unpleasant legal dispute. The music is unscathed by this, a piece of Ambient primeval rock, for me the cradle of my love for Ambient music, so to speak. A little sentence that Holger said during the recordings and that he mixed into the mix shows Peter's greatness in not always taking himself so seriously: Holger said: ‘The more you sing, Peter, the more you break. Peter didn't intervene, I just thought that was great. We were punks who suddenly found ourselves in a different world. Finding yourself between Kraut, punk and experimental Stockhausen music can be confusing.... As so often in the history of SYPH

This compilation, released on Glitterhouse and put together with much love and meticulousness by Jojo Wolter and Peter and lectorate by Chris Eckmann, was once again in Peter's typical solo style a production that took place without the authorisation of the musicians involved. Punk at its finest. A real masterpiece, I'm happy to admit, but unfortunately running completely under the radar and doomed to financial failure from the outset due to the band's squabbles, this CD never had any significant impact. Basically a great pity, because the members were not involved and working together was not wanted, desired or whatever.

I feel very honoured that Holger Czukay's LP entitled "On the way to the peak of Normal" has become the subject of this exhibition and thus also belongs to Conny Plank's life's work. This publication was preceded by another interesting story. The first recordings were made in Wuppertal in the studio rooms of the "Fehlfarben". Ulli Putsch had integrated his entire recording studio from Solingen there and produced these recording sessions. Mix and mastering were created and were intended to persuade Conny Plank to produce S.Y.P.H.. He was impressed by the quality of the recordings. Unfortunately, it did not come to a collaboration. The recordings were made and formed the basis for Wieleicht, which was then produced by Kurt Dahlke in Atatak Studio. Ulli's significant work then fell under the table for the Wieleicht and was no longer mentioned. This was the beginning of the break between the band and Ulli, who soon left because the difficulties between them became too serious.

Punk, Spacerock
S.Y.P.H.
1977 was formed as a direct reaction to the Punk movement in England by Harry Rag and Thomas Schwebel (from Fehlfarben) and Uwe Jahnke and Ulli Putsch.
1979 saw their first LP "Zurück zum Beton" (Pure Freude) ("Back to the Concrete" Pure Pleasure).
1985 Wieleicht NDW (new German wave) revisited : S.Y.P.H. instead of A.I.D.S.
During a year when German pop music had reached its lowest level in years, 4 guys from Solingen near Düsseldorf – Harry Rag (vocals), Uwe Jahnke (guitar), Jürgen Wolter (bass) and Ulli Putsch (drums) – released their sensational double album ‘Wieleicht’ with 20 tracks on the Ata Tak/Das Büro label, the importance of which paralleled another musical milestone from the group Fehlfarben ‘Monarchie und Alltag’ (‘Monarchy and Mundaneness`). Anarchistic fantasy, profundity and poetry, punk songs, reggae and psychedelia, rhythm flows reminiscent of Can and Brian Eno’s slow love songs made this the ‘White Album’ of German rock music (D. Diedrichsen) and Harry Rag the greatest of all German punk poets – an individual juxtaposed to the trend setters of that time. This CD remains timeless and unquestionably sincere.
When I found out about this record, I was no longer a member of the band. On the one hand, it's nice that music has been released that we once made together. What remains, as so often in my personal history with S.Y.P.H., is the god-like behaviour of the other protagonists who simply showed no respect then or now. It may seem strange that I am harping on about this, but it is part of my story that I present on my page and make my personal point of view heard. I haven't seen an account for this record to this day and that was almost 40 years ago. It's less about what was earned and more about the clarity of the matter. So please forgive me for my teasing, because so far nobody has bothered to give me any information about it, despite my requests.

A truly prehistoric compilation of photographs by Peter Braatz . Here is the original cast (Schwebel;Braatz,Jahnke,Putsch) at work.
A lovingly designed mini-production by Peter. However, it harbours a flaw. According to the cover, the recordings are from 3rd June 1978. However, this was the date of the first official appearance of SYPH (at that time still without points), therefore not correct. The recordings were made later and are recordings of an outdoor concert in Langenfeld. Afterwards we went to the SO 36 gig in Berlin, where Thomas Schwebel was still part of SYPH.

A collection of material, what is that supposed to be? Editor Gaukeli, known as the operator of the former German New Wave Forum, is now presenting his painstakingly collected snippets about the emergence of punk and new wave music in Germany to a smaller audience. The focus is less on the commercial outgrowths of NDW, such as Hubert Kah and Nena, and more on the underground, where many cities such as Berlin and Düsseldorf were buzzing with new and interesting music from 1978 onwards.
Tin bucket and air pump #2/3
The collection of material about the German music underground of the early 80s enters its second and third round. As usual, Gaukeli provides us with interesting and entertaining information about the beginnings of New Wave/NDW in West Germany, far removed from the music industry. (Scene in Bonn/creation of the Normal Label, Irre Tapes, S.Y.P.H. travelling, Korg MS-20 - the synth legend and much more). Interviews with contemporary witnesses (e.g. Kurt Dahlke/Der Plan) and the continuation of the selection discography (H-M) round off this lavishly packaged fanzine.
In the spirit of Throbbing Gristle: underground material for underground people.

Authentic contemporary witnesses such as the enterprising musician Frieder Butzmann and the S.Y.P.H. drummer Ulli Putsch finally have their say. There are also short but sweet stories about the scene in Bergisch Gladbach (!) and interviews with the protagonists of underground bands such as Phonophobia or Verlorene Unschuld. The second half of the magazine consists of a so-called New Wave and Punk selection discography. This ranges from A to G, is richly annotated by contemporary voices (especially Sounds) and will be continued in further issues of B&L.

S.Y.P.H. Ratinger Hof 1984
pin from S.Y.P.H. Live in Kassel Punk Kongress Gig
